Surf Folk hits the Demo Mission Derby with...

UNDER THE DRIFTWOOD TREE

Under the Driftwood Tree are a five piece surf style folk band using fantastic vocal harmonies along with the usual and “not so usual” instruments – ukuleles, didgeridoos, guitars, bass, djembe, cajon and accordion.

Under the Driftwood Tree is made up of Chris Stoodley, Kathryn Shanahan, Robbie Price, Alex Perry & Samuel Griffiths and are based in Cardiff.

Their “bohemian sound fills you with an enormous sense of well being; the rugged and rusty vocals transform the songs into mini-tales that explain a whole notion of concepts and simple philosphies” according to surface unsigned judges.

Last But Not Least - The Theory Of Six Degrees

Taking the Challenge this week is.

THE THEORY OF 6 DEGREES

Scott,13,(lead vocals, bass) and Joe,13,(lead guitar, backing vox) met in 2006, playing live in the Houseband on BBC’s TMi show.

In 2008 they formed T6D with Jack, 14, (rhythm guitar, backing vox) and, later, Sam, 14, (drums) at Realistic Rock, Epsom.

They write their own music, a mix of Indie/Rock, they’ve just released their 2nd EP.

They were finalists in Manchester XFM Rockschool Competition 2008.

Last year they were the Houseband for Radio 1’s Switch, were runners up in National Live and Unsigned Competition and won the National Yamaha Download Competition.

They are playing at Glastonbury 2010, the youngest band ever.

THE JAYWAYS

The Jayways formed in 2007 in drummer Rees’ garage where the band’s sound evolved into big emotive anthems with echoes of The Strokes and The Kings of Leon. They excite the senses and enlighten the soul.

Lead by singer Gerry Duffield, who in true rock’n’ roll front man fashion is dating a stripper, the band have built a huge local following, selling out shows all across Essex, appearing at club NME and XFM nights as well as running their own club nights in Southend.
The Jayways gigs are rock shows, at times played with a foot in a cast or an arm in a sling. News of the Essex boy’s antics reached The Animal Farm, the London based producers who took them under their wing.

At The Animal Farm the band recorded a collection of songs about beautiful dreams set against a harsh economic landscape. In hard times, songs about hope and beauty don’t sound saccharine. They sound gritty and real.
The Jayways debut EP ‘Light’ is released on The Animal Farm in January 2010

They were recently talent-scouted by veteran Led-Zep/Stax producer Terry Manning and invited to record their latest EP with him in the Bahamas studios owned by Island Records founder Chris Blackwell. Exposure to date includes Huw Stephens on Radio One and two XFM Sessions. Upcoming live highlights include IndigO2, Camden Crawl and Underage Festival. With three years, three EPs and 80+ gigs under their belts, Shiva are set to quake the music world in 2010 with new singles 'Waiting' and 'Far Away' and their ever-electrifying live show.

DAMN VANDALS

Damn Vandals met on an internet graffiti forum and together decided to paint "Destroy Mondays" eight foot high on the side of a commuter train parked up near Catford.

It was 2007.

Rumbled by a police sting operation they got 500 hours community service. Their punishment was to re-decorate the local youth club. After hours one night they stumbled on a room containing guitars and a drum kit. The rest is soon to be history.

A Break for Easter...

Congratulations to Ashleigh Ashley who managed to beat the seemingly unstoppable Kooler Kings this week.

She will sail through to next week to face all new competitors.

However due to the bank holiday monday break we see it as only fair if we give all new competitors a full week on the Demo Mission Derby. So we will have to wait until monday 12th April to see who Ashleigh will face...

KOOLER KINGS are a young exciting new band formed from the current emerging Wimbledon & SW London music scene, spear headed by XFM DJ John Kennedy & Jamie T, with whom they recently played a show.

The four members all met at school & Kooler Kings were formed. They were also chosen specifically to support Daisy Dares You at her Sony records showcase. When the band played their first gig at The Watershed in Wimbledon, DJ John Kennedy saw them & immediately played them on his XFM radio show. The band were recently interviewed & filmed playing live for a docu-movie about the Reading festival due out on TV & Cinema in the next few months.

Having written almost an album's worth of material, the band entered the studio to record their debut single. They are gigging extensively in London, especially Wimbledon where a dramatic new music scene for new bands is emerging.

HIGSBOSUN

Higsbosun is the experimental ramblings of Sam Mercer, Steven Parratt, Kris Purcell and Craig Owen. We have been playing together as a group for about a year now have a sound all of our own, somewhere between harmony and chaos.
All four members are born and bred in various parts of Liverpool with different experiences and tastes, somehow fused together under the umbrella of music (strange how that happens).

Our roots are firmly embedded in rock, dance and jazz, but we like to mess with the sound and the output is, more often than not, 'interesting'.

If you feel like expanding your tastes, listen to our music, it's Marmite. Lad.

Astroman are a funk rock superhero power trio from London, blending slamming beats, heavy funk basslines and squealing guitar solos to create Superfunky Thunderboogie! With Zac on lead guitar and vocals, Brian on bass and Marco on drums and vocals, their main influences are Prince, the Red Hot Chili Peppers and Hendrix but have developed something all of their own that stands out in the current music scene. They layer samples in the studio and slam it live bringing a surprising amount of power from just three people. Their first album Riffzilla is available on iTunes and Amazon, produced by Colin Leggett (Primal Scream) and are well on their way to their second - their current target is to release one free track every two weeks! THE AMATEURS

After starting up as backing band to Robert Plants Tsunami relief campaign The Amateurs formed.

They then released debut EP ‘Homesick’ last March with London label The Animal Farm.

and played Leeds Festival 2009 for Oxfam.

Homesick was named ‘Single of the week’ on inthenews.co.uk over major label artists such as The Noisettes and received acknowledgement from Billboard for being listed in their top 500 songs of 2009.

They have played in front of thousands of people at Birmingham’s Artsfest with Athlete and Reverend and the Makers (September 2009). They played at the Exposure Music Awards after receiving 2 nominations for ‘Best Pop Song’ and ‘Best Song Overall’ and reached final 5 of BBC Introducing Glastonbury Unsigned band 2009.

The Amateurs Currently working on second EP with Gareth Parton (The Go! Team) and Dave Draper (They Fell From The Sky), due for release early 2010. Currently negotiating Management and Publishing deals.

Eighteen Nightmares at the Lux or ENL are a London based band and have a sound that marries all that is good in rock 'n' roll; an infectious blend of catchy riffs, banging beats and clever changes has started to earn the band high praise. The energy the band creates live needs to be seen to be believed. ENL recently launched their debut EP ‘Fuzz Candy’ at Death Disco (Notting Hill Arts Club) last week and Danny Watson who organises Death Disco comment was; “I was seriously blown away. I’ve heard stuff but I didn’t expect them to be that tight and also that diverse; at times it was like Rat Scabies drumming for Roxy Music... loved it, pretty bloody amazing.” As a result ENL have been given a bi monthly residency at Death Disco through to the end of the year.

ANDY FLEET

Songwriter, vocalist and piano player andyfleet pulls his influences from the piano men; Tom Waits, Randy Newman, Donald Fagen and Allen Toussaint. His jazz and blues flavoured popular music suits his warm conversational voice and his songs celebrate old friends (Get The Boys Round), recount long nights playing cocktail piano (The Piano Bum) and tell tales of nocturnal infatuation (Genya). He performs solo or with his band (bass, drums, piano & trumpet)

He has been gigging in and around London at venues such as the Soho Revue Bar, Cobden Club, Slaughtered Lamb and The Stables (MK). Andy works as a session player and writes for himself as well as other artists and his tunes have been aired on BBC radio and performed at some of London's finest jazz clubs including the 606 Club and Pizza on the Park.

Andy loves jazz, composition, live music and motorcycles.

SUBSET was created in 2009 (four piece rock), played over 35 shows (London, Dunstable, MiltonKeynes, Luton, StAlbans, Northampton, Watford...), we are scheduled for a 12 dates tour in June and will play 3 small festivals this summer. We have a manager called Ryan and a music video. We also have teeshirts, have released 3 singles on itune and have been interviewed and played by the BBC 4 times since last year.

Me and The Beast have been described by the NME as “Playful and posturing synth-pop from the Capital” Not a bad description...

Starting life in January 2009, the band have had a short but so far remarkable career being featured by BBC radio as part of their introducing initiative, playing a number of acclaimed showcase gigs, receiving awards from prestigious music personalities, Malcolm McLaren and Anne Nightingale.

Me and The Beast are a studio driven band who’s sound derives from Carly Cunningham’s powerful theatrical vocals, Ash Bull’s Vince Clark inspired synth lines Damo’s funky, driving bass lines and Wooky’s syncopated electronic rhythm section.

Focusing on writing music for people to dance to with infectious musical hooks and simple but powerful lyrical messages, Me and The Beast have that refreshing unusual combination of a band with depth underpinned by a hugely commercial charm.

ZALINSKI

Still on top and going into their second weeks as champions. With and unbelieveable 53% of the vote they beat off the strong competition brought by V-Double-E. Can they hold it together for a third week running?

Dispatching distorted hymns for the lost and hopeful, Zalinski's music is a groove heavy rock-out. Venting influences from Radiohead to Stevie Wonder, Blur to Hendrix, Zalinski channel eclectic influences through a feel good funnel.

Originally formed for a one-off charity concert in London, Zalinski are a hard hitting, groove orientated Rock band.. Since their conception in the summer of 2007 the band have been gigging constantly, and recording consistently. In the summer of 2009 the band played in the finals of three of the UK's largest unsigned competitions, and in October released their first official Ep 'Actions, Reactions & Misunderstandings'. Zalinski started 2010 supporting Pete Doherty at 'The Rhythm Factory' and are due to record their next Ep in March.

Its a new week and so there are new challengers. 1st up its...

Crash & Berney

Crash & Berney are a gorgeous-sounding 5 piece pop/funk/soul band with a super sexy saxophone, a banging rhythm section and a little front lady with a big, beautiful, soulful voice.

They hail from Chepstow, and they've spent a year gigging all over South Wales and Gloucestershire, including Cardiff and Bristol. They're fresh, they perform and they play like they mean it. They're also very good did we mention? Their astonishing pianist is aged only 15, and the rest aged 17-20, they are young and raring to go! All trained either classically or in jazz, they have fused impeccable technique with spine-tingling energy and soul, creating their own unmistakable blend of what they like to call "pop for people with soul". Since releasing thier EP "Anyway" 4 months ago they've gone on to record another in their drummer's living room, aptly named "The Living Room EP", and look set for their full album release in May 2010.

MONSTERS IN THE ATTIC

Monsters In The Attic are a London based trio who play up-beat rock n' roll with hard rock influences, riding between down-strung punk beats and power ballad harmonic melodies.

Inspired by bands such as the Rocket From The Crypt, Priestess and even The Beach Boys, they sing tongue-in-cheek songs about riding your luck, zombie girlfriends and generally being bad-ass. Composed of cockney singer Patch Barbet, John Frusciante

sque lead-guitar Tom Walding and blues inspired bassist Ben Wooster, this band is spearheading a mission to punch the fun back into rock n' roll and offer a refreshing alternative to stereotypically stroppy-faced musicians.

"Every Black Cloud" the title of the bands latest 4 track EP is the result of the bands recent hard work and dedication to their trade, recorded over a long weekend in July 2009 ,it is a reflection of where the band are now and a starting point for all things to come.

The EP is currently being distributed worldwide on iTunes, Amazon, Napster any many other digital service providers.

Already in 2009 the band have played extensively throughout the UK and also their first European festival date in Torrevieja Spain they are constantly adding dates at venues throughout the country.

They have a hunger and desire to continuously develop creative ideas whilst always striving to better their last recording or live performance.

Mondays are rubbish.

They come round too quickly and ruin your Sunday evening. They remind you how much you hate your job and your boss. Enter Fix Monday, four lads from Leamington on a musical crusade to make your life better.

Fix Monday's thoughtfully crafted pop songs enter your head and stay there. With many musical influences including Jeff Buckley, Elbow and Queen, the band has developed a reputation for elaborate vocal harmonies, being known to step off stage and into the audience to sing unplugged, anchored only by a single guitar. This recently caught the attention of Grammy award winning producer Roger Lomas who described the band's live performance and Songwriting as "excellent".

Not content waiting for a record label to sign them, Fix Monday created their own and signed themselves - through Sherpa Recordings the band released their debut single 'Margaret Peterson' on 1st December last year, leading to several plays on Tom Robinson's BBC 6 Music "Introducing" show. A DIY national tour followed, which saw the band playing to packed out venues, gaining new fans both locally and further afield.

First appearing on stage in an Art College bar in Scotland's capital (November 2007), the five fresh-faced members of 'i said yes' have, since then, taken their upbeat, melodic, pop-infused folk to many other corners of the UK, playing at various venues across cities such as London, Oxford and Bristol and at various festivals such as Offset, Linkylea, Green Man Fayre, Hidden Festival, and the BBC Introducing Stage at the Swindon Shuffle. 'i said yes' have been played on XFM, 6music, regional BBC Introducing Shows and were featured on the XFM 'new music rising' podcast.

ISY spent New Year 08/09, and some of Sept 09, recording with the brilliant Joe Robertson in Edinburgh. Without Joe's patience and brilliance, they'd be but a shadow of the recordings that they are now.

Zenyth have a big reputation of being a must-see live band which is continually growing. They have been nominated in the category of 'best unsigned act' in the UK at the Vodafone Live Music Awards in 2007, along side acts such as Razorlight, Muse and The Killers. Shortly afterwards they were shortlisted as one of the top 4 unsigned bands in the UK by iTunes, XFm and Coca-cola and appearences on Transmission with T-mobile- Channel 4 and Avenue 11 followed. Their blend of riff, electro-effect rock and big melodies have been turning heads of late and are one of South Wales' next big acts!
